Suicide The Real Cost (March 2009)

GROW in Ireland today (Monday March 9th) announced a one day conference themed “Promoting Positive Mental Health in Young People” on the 24th June, 2009 at the Tullamore Court Hotel, Tullamore.

Announcing the conference Michele Kerrigan, GROW in Ireland’s Chief Executive said

“Ireland is suffering a sharp increase in suicides, particularly among young men. With approximately 500 lives lost to suicide each year Ireland is now the fifth highest in Europe with one in four suicides occurring amongst those aged between 15 and 24.

Many communities in Ireland have felt the loss of a young person to suicide. They have experienced and witnessed at first hand the deep despair and grief felt by those left behind.  It is not just the families that are grieving or feeling the loss it is whole communities, friends, colleagues, school friends.

“As part of GROW in Ireland’s commitment to working with young people who may be experiencing psychological or emotional distress we are  holding this one day conference which will consider the particular supports and interventions required for young people at risk.

Commenting on the conference’s location Ms Kerrigan added

“According to a recent report published by the Institute of Public Health in Ireland Offaly has Ireland's highest suicide rate .

GROW in Ireland is the largest mental health organisation working to promote mental health and wellbeing for all, to prevent mental ill-health for people who are “at risk” and to support people with mental health problems during their recovery.
