Media release (October 8th 2009)

Seven fold increase in the number of young adults attending mental health support groups.

Calls on Government to spend the promised 27 million Euro on core mental health services not spent in 2008.

Irish charity Grow today announced that it has seen a seven-fold increase in young adults attending its mental health support groups in 2009.

Since the start of this year Grow has increased the number of groups dedicated to young adults from just one to six, with new groups opening in Galway, Tullamore, Limerick, Cork and Waterford and later this month a further two will open in Portarlington and Letterkenny.

Michelle Kerrigan, CEO of Grow in Ireland explained, “We are noticing a very disturbing pattern right across the country from young adults attending the groups who are all experiencing the same social phobias. They are presenting with depression, anxiety, isolation and suicidal thoughts.”

“Having the opportunity to talk for a couple of hours a week to people who have gone through a similar experience is a necessary step on the road to recovery. Unlike relatives and friends, fellow Grow members do not judge one another, they only support and encourage,” she added.

In the budget, Grow is calling on the government to spend the promised €27m to address core deficits in mental health services which was not spent in 2008. Community, primary and mental health services must be funded and enhanced in response to increasing need.  Restricting spending on mental health services does not lead to cost savings.

Kerrigan continued, “1 in 4 people in Ireland will suffer with a mental health disorder at some point in their life however people can and do recover from the most serious mental health problems. When mental health problems are addressed early, it is much easier to get on the path to recovery.”

Grow is a national community based organisation working to promote mental health and wellbeing for all.  With over 130 groups around the country Grow supports people who may be particularly vulnerable, including those who have been hospitalised, who have attempted suicide, or who have suicidal thoughts. Grow is increasingly working with, young adults who are experiencing psychological or emotional distress.
